New paper! Unequal impacts of extreme weather events in the agricultural sector

The agricultural sector is often reported to be very vulnerable to climate change impacts, in particular extreme weather. In this new paper, the effects of extreme weather events on arable crop farm revenue in the Netherlands were analyzed. Through a survey among potato and onion farmers, we found that surveyed farmers experienced revenue losses at least once between 2018 and 2022. However, the impacts between farmers differ strongly. Besides differences in exposure to extreme weather (hazards), these differences can be explained through various social and physical vulnerability indicators, such as access to climate adaptation measures or farm size. This research was conducted as part of a Master thesis research and supervised by two researchers from the VU Amsterdam who are working on the REACHOUT project.
